What is a incoming health insurance?+
Incoming health insurance is a temporary health insurance solution for foreigners who are staying in Germany for up to 365 days. It provides comprehensive medical coverage and can be used for visa applications, residence permits, job seekers, language students, expats, and family members relocating to Germany.
Is the insurance accepted for German visa applications?+
Yes, the incoming health insurance we offer is accepted for National Visa, Job Seeker Visa, Opportunity Card, Language Course Visa, Family Reunion Visa, Residence Permit Applications and EU Blue Card applications during the initial relocation period. You will receive an official insurance certificate immediately after the policy has been issued.
Who can apply for this insurance?+
You can apply if you are under 75 years of age and staying in Germany temporarily as a visitor (this does not apply to visa applicants who plan to stay in Germany long term).
Can I purchase the insurance after arriving in Germany?+
Yes, you can apply even after entering Germany. However, if you apply more than 31 days after your arrival, a general waiting period of 31 days applies before most benefits become available. If you apply within the first 31 days after arrival, there is no general waiting period.
How long can I stay insured?+
The maximum insurance period is 365 days.
What medical treatments are covered?+
The insurance covers medically necessary treatment including general practitioner visits, specialist consultations, outpatient treatment, inpatient hospital treatment, emergency medical treatment, prescription medication, diagnostic examinations, medically necessary transportation, pregnancy complications, premature birth and miscarriage treatment. Coverage applies up to the limits stated in the selected tariff.
Can I choose my own doctor?+
Yes, you are free to choose any licensed doctor, specialist, dentist, or hospital in Germany. There is no restricted provider network.
What hospital benefits are included?+
The insurance covers medically necessary inpatient treatment, shared hospital room accommodation, nursing care, hospital meals and medically necessary transportation.
Are prescription medications covered?+
Yes, medically necessary medication prescribed by a doctor is covered. Cosmetic products, supplements and nutritional preparations are not covered.
Is dental treatment covered?+
Yes, the insurance covers emergency and pain-relieving dental treatment. Basic covers dental treatment up to €500 per insurance year. Profi covers dental treatment up to €1,000 per insurance year, dental prosthetics up to €1,250 per insurance year and preventive dental check-ups up to €200 per insurance year. Orthodontic treatment, implants and cosmetic dental procedures are not covered.
Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?+
Coverage is available but limited. For illnesses, complaints or accidents that were known during the six months before the insurance start date, the insured person must contribute the first €5,000 per claim. Benefits are limited to a maximum of €30,000 during the contract period.
Is pregnancy covered?+
Yes, both tariffs cover pregnancy complications, miscarriage and premature birth before the 36th week. The Profi tariff additionally covers preventive pregnancy examinations and childbirth.
What happens in a medical emergency?+
Emergency treatment is fully covered according to the policy conditions. Emergency transportation and inpatient hospital admission are also included where medically necessary.
Is medical repatriation included?+
Yes, medically necessary repatriation to your home country is covered if further treatment abroad is not reasonable, treatment abroad is expected to exceed 14 days or repatriation is medically advisable.
Am I covered outside Germany?+
Yes, coverage also applies during temporary trips to all EU countries, Schengen countries, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. Your home country is excluded. For contracts lasting at least 12 months, temporary visits to your home country are covered for up to 6 weeks.
Is there a deductible?+
A deductible of €25 applies per insured event.
Can my spouse and children be insured?+
Yes, separate insurance policies can be arranged for spouses and children.
Can I switch later to German Public Health Insurance?+
Yes, many expats only use incoming health insurance as a temporary solution. Once you start work and become eligible for public health insurance, you can switch to a German public health insurance provider. We support you with this process, simply click here.
Can I switch later to German Private Health Insurance?+
Yes, many expats only use incoming health insurance as a temporary solution. Once you start work and become eligible for private health insurance, you can switch to a German private health insurance provider. We support you with this process, simply click here.
What is not covered?+
Examples of exclusions include treatment that was already planned before travelling, cosmetic treatments, psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, addiction treatment, spa and rehabilitation cures, artificial insemination, vaccinations, orthodontics and organ donation treatments. Please refer to the policy conditions for the complete list of exclusions.
